Two’Fer Tuesday – Super-Sub?

PocoToday’s Two’Fer Tuesday post focuses on a bass player who made a career out of replacing Randy Meisner in bands.  You could call him a super-sub, but I like to think of him as an incredible bass player, singer, and songwriter that made the most of opportunities that were presented to him.  He is now a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and deservedly so.

A couple of his best performances with Poco are posted below.  Post a comment if you know the name of this musician.  Once everyone has a chance to comment I will do another post and talk a little more him.  For now, sit back and enjoy the music!

Should Have Made It – Brothers and Sisters

Ten Years After (with Alvin Lee) had the advantage of being showcased at Woodstock, the most famous rock festival ever (see yesterday’s post for the video).  That exposure launched their career into the stratosphere.  While their success was well deserved, I doubt any of us would remember them today if it wasn’t for Woodstock.

I bring this up because there are a lot of groups that are extremely talented but never break into the big time because they don’t manage to get the exposure that they deserve.  Brothers and Sisters out of Austin, Texas is one of those bands.  I stumbled onto their music about five years ago and fell in love with it.

Take a look at their website, http://www.thebrothersandsisters.com, for some good background information about the band.

Let me share a couple of songs from their first album….

Unfortunately the group appears to have faded away.  I have been unable to find any new music from them beyond the two albums that they produced (Brothers and Sisters and Fortuneately) both of which are available for purchase on their website.

SOMETIMES TALENT IS JUST NOT ENOUGH……..

RIP – Alvin Lee

Two’fer Tuesday – O’Lucky Man

OLuckyMan

This weekend I was thinking about a movie that fell in love with back in 1973 but haven’t seen again since then.  The movie, O Lucky Man, was written and directed by Lindsay Anderson.  It was a brilliant allegory on life in a capitalist society and a very young Malcolm McDowell was terrific in the lead role of Mick Travis.  The movie was not very successful, it opened and closed in the save week in the town in Alabama where I was attending college, but I was lucky enough to see it.

One of the most interesting parts of the movie was the use of Alan Price (the original keyboard player for the Animals) and his band as kind of a Greek chorus.  They appeared at various time throughout the movie and their songs provided a running commentary.  The songs were quite brilliant  in their own right, providing a commentary on the real facts of life that I was just beginning to learn about as a young man of twenty in the United States.  I bought the soundtrack album and still treasure that vinyl copy.

So……for today’s Two’fer Tuesday Post I want to share two of my favorite songs from the movie.  Their lyrics are as meaningful to me as they were back in 1973.  As always, let me know what you think.

Sequestration Has Happened – Republicans Flip Off Average Americans To Protect Their Rich Buddies

While Republicans Warn Against ‘Greece,’ That Is Exactly Where Austerity Budgeting Will Lead U.S.

By Joe Conason

Indebted America is in danger of turning into destitute Greece, or so congressional Republicans and conservative commentators have been warning us for years now. For many reasons, this is an absurd comparison—but it may not always be quite so ridiculous if Washington’s advocates of austerity get their way.The Republicans actually want to impose Greek-style budget slashing on the United States. And the federal budget sequestration scheduled to take effect next week could represent the first serious step here toward the kind of fiscal policies that have proved so ruinous not only in Greece—raising unemployment, destroying hope and encouraging extremism—but across Europe.Nearly every day, House Speaker John Boehner or Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell—or Sen. Rand Paul or Rep. Paul Ryan, or almost any other prominent Republican—insists that the only way to improve the economic prospects of the American people is to impose drastic budget cuts on them. While these Republican leaders don’t love the sequester budget only because it cuts too deeply into defense programs, they are eager to impose similar cuts or worse on every domestic function, from health care and education, to food safety and infrastructure.Unwilling as they usually are to name specific cuts, the Republican plans that have emerged lately are indeed similar in scope and impact to those imposed by European central bankers on Greece, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and other beleaguered states across the continent (and imposed by the British government on the United Kingdom itself).

 European Austerity Isn’t Working

Enacting the same fiscal policies in this country would, presumably, induce the same effects. Yet despite their enthusiasm for extreme austerity, the Republican, tea party and assorted media soothsayers almost never want to discuss what has happened in Europe as a result of those same policies. It is not always possible to ignore the unhappy reality of renewed recession, from England to Italy.

Just last weekend, the British were jolted by news that Moody’s had downgraded investments in their country’s sovereign debt from its traditional AAA status.

Why would the bond-rating agency do something like that? Principally because the miserable budgeting of Tory Prime Minister David Cameron’s government has mired the United Kingdom in negative growth, with no prospect of reducing its debt, which keeps growing. So the scheme that was supposed to improve the fiscal outlook for the British has merely lowered their credit rating. That wasn’t supposed to happen—in fact, the austerity plan was designed to preserve Britain’s AAA rating—but it was inevitable as soon as Downing Street chose budget-balancing over growth.

The same downward trajectory can be marked wherever the leaders of dominant Germany have forced austerity plans onto indebted governments.

So damaging has this process become for all of Europe that the Germans finally began suffering the ironic consequences in the last quarter of 2012. Their export-led growth strategies cannot work when their neighbors, reduced to poverty, can no longer purchase German goods. If German exports pick up again this year, it will only happen because customers in the U.S. and China remain exempt from the effects of austerity.

Until now, the United States has escaped the fate of Europe, remaining the “sole bright spot” of steady growth in the global economy because President Obama resisted the fiscal extremism of his Republican adversaries and contrived to ward off recession with necessary spending. Now sequestration, with all of its dire social and economic effects, will provide a taste of what is to come under Republican austerity: a shrunken nation with a dim future.

John Boehner Compares Tax Proposals Of White House To Stealing

WASHINGTON — House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) declared Thursday that seeking more revenue in order to reduce the federal deficit or to replace sequestration’s pending budget cuts is tantamount to stealing from Americans.

Boehner was asked why House Republicans are ruling out any further tax hikes to fix America’s finances, when the more than $2 trillion in deficit reduction passed over the last two years is weighted in favor of cuts over revenue by a ratio of more than two to one.

“The president got his tax hikes,” Boehner told reporters on Capitol Hill, referring to some $600 billion in tax increases Congress passed in the fiscal-cliff deal that ended the Bush-era tax cuts on incomes above $400,000.

“The American economy is going to create more tax revenue this year than any other year in our history. We don’t have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem,” Boehner added. “How much more money do we want to steal from the American people to fund more government? I’m for no more.”

President Barack Obama has proposed replacing the budget sequestration plan with another $600 billion in taxes by closing loopholes, as well as $930 billion in cuts.

Boehner also repeated his position that the House had no responsibility to propose a new replacement for sequestration because lawmakers passed two bills — now expired — to do so in the last Congress.

Those bills, however, replaced only a year’s worth of sequestration, amounting to less than $100 billion. Sequestration mandates $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction over 10 years, and neither of the GOP plans suggested how to find the entire amount.

(Thanks to Huffington Post for this reporting)

This article sums it all up.

President Obama’s proposal is a balanced approach for deficit reduction….a combination of budget cuts and closing tax loopholes that only benefit the extremely wealthy.

Mr Boehner, and his Republican buddies, believes that cutting out these tax loopholes (i.e.having the rich pay their fair share) is stealing.  Instead of “stealing” from the extremely wealthy it is much better to pass extreme budget cuts that will almost exclusively impact the middle class and poor.   Same old Republican bullshit cloaked in a new argument……protect the rich and screw the poor.

I’m not buying it…..how about you?  Let’s pledge today to do whatever it takes to hold the Senate and take back the House in the 2014 mid-term elections.

Sequestration Countdown – Delusional “Tea Party” Republicans Love The Sequester

Deficit-deluded tea party Republicans love the sequester scheme

Tea party deficit zealots love the sequesterDavid Horsey / Los Angeles Times (February 26, 2013)

The delusions of tea party Republicans are about to create a lot of misery for America. The “sequester” — the drastic set of budget cuts formerly known as the “fiscal cliff” — seems very likely to go into effect at the end of this week due in no small part to the fact that hyper-conservative lawmakers, such as Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, actually think it’s a pretty swell idea.

Their obsessive and mistaken belief that the federal deficit is the greatest threat to the republic is leading them to block any compromise with Democrats that would delay or repeal the looming budget reductions.

They want government to get smaller and smaller, even if the cuts will come too quickly and slash too indiscriminately. The supreme absurdity of their position is that this could so damage the American economy that federal revenue will drop and deficit reduction will become even harder to achieve.

The tea party folks may be sincere, loyal citizens, but their notions about how the economy works are exactly that: mere notions. Their core notion is that government needs to do nothing more than get out of the way of business in order for the economy to boom and bloom.

In an 18th century world or in the fiction of Ayn Rand that might have worked, but the reality is different. The United States became the world’s biggest economy in the post-World War II years for many reasons, but one big reason is that government played a pivotal role.

Government built infrastructure like the interstate highway system, paid for crucial research and development, ran the space program, supported a massive military and played referee in the financial realm so that those who wanted to rig the system could not do it as easily as they had in the 1920s.

When, in his first inaugural address, Ronald Reagan famously said government is the problem, not the solution, he established the Republican mantra that has not changed in all the years since. It was a clever bit of rhetoric, but it has turned too many Republicans into economic simpletons. Government can, indeed, be part of the problem sometimes, but it cannot be left out of any solution to the challenges of our complex modern economy.

Pete Peterson, President Nixon’s secretary of Commerce, has campaigned for years against rising deficits and has earned the ire of liberals who think his insistence on restructuring Social Security and Medicare is too extreme and unnecessary. Yet, even Peterson, in an interview on public radio’s “Marketplace” on Tuesday, said many of his fellow Republicans are crazy to think the sequester cuts are a smart idea.

Peterson said the deficit problem is long-term and must be dealt with comprehensively through spending reductions, entitlement reforms and revenue increases, a.k.a. taxes.

What should not happen, Peterson insisted, is a governmental retreat from investing in America’s economic future through funding of things such as education, infrastructure and basic scientific research. Of course, to the tea party Republicans, such talk is heresy.

There is one other fallacy that anti-government conservatives cling to, and they talk about it so much that they have convinced most of the people in the country it is true. That fallacious premise is that President Obama has done nothing to reduce the federal deficit. In fact, the deficit has shrunk as a percentage of GDP every year since Obama took office. Check the numbers. Look it up. We are actually on the right track!

But that will not last long if hundreds of thousands of government workers are furloughed, if military bases are closed, if the air traffic control system is disrupted or if many other important government services are crippled. That will start happening on Friday when the sequester kicks in. If it does, we will have a bunch of deluded deficit hawks to thank for it.

I posted another song this week that has an eerie similarity to this one.   If you post a comment identifying that song, I will do another post that explains why the two songs sound so familiar.
