Hammond B3

So…..this is my third post in the new Epic Opening Riff series.  Today’s riff features a Hammond B3 organ and comes from a song that was popular when I was in college.  Let’s listen……

This riff is is from an very under rated keyboard player who was the leader of a very under appreciated band.  They only had a couple of hits in the early 70s and they deserved a lot more success than that.

Bass

So…..this is my second post in the new Epic Opening Riff series.  Today’s riff features a bass guitar and comes from a song that was popular when I was in high school.  Let’s listen……

This opening riff is memorable in that it not only introduces the song but continues to drive it.  If you don’t remember the group based on just the opening riff you would gotten a huge hint it if I would have let you listen for two more seconds.

So…..this is my first post in the new series that I promo’ed a few days ago.  Most of you probably assumed that the series would be focused just on guitar riffs but when you listen to the riff posted below you can tell that I won’t be afraid to mix things up.  You can expect plenty of opening guitar riffs but you can also expect bass riffs, drum riffs, synth riffs, etc.

This opening riff is one of my all time favorites.  It is unbelievably soulful and sets the stage for the rest of the song.  The riff opens the song, is revisited in the middle, closes the song, and, in the process, totally defines the song.  If I hear just the opening note I am instantly transported back to 1976 when I was lucky enough to see the band play this song live.  It was amazing…….

Here’s a tidbit about the riff that I think you’ll enjoy.  The sax player in the song was inspired to play the riff when he was told……

……..think about it like this: You’re in New York City, on the Bowery. It’s 3 a.m. You’re under a streetlamp. There’s a light mist coming down. You’re all by yourself. Show me what that sounds like.
