Paul Ryan: No, I Want to Help the Poor! Really!…….By Cutting Poverty Programs

More of the same from the Romney/Ryan ticket today.  Lot’s of hot air and absolutely no substance.  Completely Wrong…..Once Again!!!

Thanks to the Huffington Post for the article and the headline.

Paul Ryan, the celebrated Republican idea man, delivered a speech today entitled “Restoring the Promise of Upward Mobility in America’s Economy.” Upward mobility is a vital concept for Ryan. He is the author of a plan that would, as budget expert Robert Greenstein put it, “produce the largest redistribution of income from the bottom to the top in modern U.S. history.” Upward mobility is Ryan’s constant answer to this objection. In his telling, his plans would make the economy more open and free, making it easier for the poor to rise and the rich to fall. As Ryan says, “We believe that Americans are better off in a dynamic, free-enterprise-based economy that fosters economic growth, opportunity and upward mobility instead of a stagnant, government-directed economy that stifles job creation and fosters government dependency.”

Ryan assumes that increasing the role of the market and decreasing the role of government will increase upward mobility — the wealthier people can get, the easier it will be to get wealthy or to fall out of wealth. But he doesn’t argue it explicitly, and for good reason: There’s no reason to believe it. In fact, the evidence all suggests exactly the opposite. Economic mobility is higher in countries with higher levels of equality and lower in countries with lower equality. The correlation is very tight:

Ryan tells a story in which, over the last several decades, the United States has seen lower levels of economic mobility because government has grown too large. But higher inequality and lower mobility have been growing in tandem.

So, what does Ryan have to offer in defense of his promise to “restore upward mobility?” He offers a riff about the importance of education reform, without either explaining what such a policy would entail or how it would differ from the very aggressive education reforms the Obama administration has implemented. He praises the role of private charity, suggesting that rolling back government assistance for the poor will encourage the private sector to step in, a decidedly shaky proposition.

Mostly, he talks about welfare reform. There is a consensus that welfare as we knew it did create serious cultural pathologies. Ryan cites the case of welfare reform frequently. To him, it proves that large cuts to programs that help poor people of any kind at all are not only harmless but will help the poor. “The welfare-reform mindset hasn’t been applied with equal vigor across the spectrum of anti-poverty programs,” he says. Thus he proposes enormous cuts — to children’s health-insurance grants, Head Start, food stamps, and, especially, Medicaid, which would have to throw about half its current beneficiaries off their coverage under his proposal.

Ryan paints a picture in which we face an impending debt crisis but also have the good fortune of spending cast sums on poor people in a way that harms them, allowing us to reap large budgetary savings while giving the poor a helping hand. What an incredible stroke of good fortune!

But is it true that these programs foster dependency? Ryan avoids fleshing out his implication with any specifics, perhaps because to do so would quickly expose the vapidity of his claims. For one thing, welfare reform was undertaken during the nineties boom, when a red-hot employment market made it possible for people to transition from welfare to low-rung jobs. The notion that there are jobs today going unfilled but for the laziness of the poor has no relationship to reality.

Second, welfare was designed to replace the role of a male breadwinner and thus created a family model in which a single mother could expect to receive a basic income in lieu of work. That isn’t true of the programs Ryan wants to slash.

There is one ironic exception here, though: Medicaid. Medicaid offers health care for the very poor, along with nursing-home care and other special medical needs. It is possible that the availability of Medicaid could reduce a person’s incentive to earn more money, because at some point, they would earn enough to no longer qualify for Medicaid and then they’d lose their health insurance. But this would only hold true if we enact Ryan’s proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Otherwise, people will have access to health insurance at every income level.

Ryan likewise argues that “Medicaid is reaching a breaking point.” It’s true that the cost of Medicaid has risen. But it’s both far cheaper than private insurance and has grown at a much slower rate. Medicaid has gotten more expensive because health care has gotten more expensive.

For all his self-proclaimed wonkery, Ryan does not engage with any of the details of the policy here. All he offers is hand-waving cover designed to justify the infliction of catastrophic harm upon the poorest and sickest among us. What’s the word for that? Oh, right — brave.

Mitt Romney – Completely Wrong About The Auto Bailout (STILL LYING ABOUT IT)

A great article from the Huffington Post today!

Romney On Auto Bailout In 2008:

‘If You Write A Check,

They’re Going To Go Out Of Business’

Romney Auto Bailout

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney’s opposition to the loans President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama have extended to the auto industry has long been an awkward scab on his presidential campaign. In Ohio, in particular, one out of every eight jobs is connected to the sector.

Having insisted, during fall 2008, that Detroit would have been better off going through a managed bankruptcy, Romney’s been left to explain the nuances of his position or, simply, fudge it.

During Monday night’s third and final presidential debate — as he’s done before — Romney chose the latter course:

I said they need — these companies need to go through a managed bankruptcy. And in that process, they can get government help and government guarantees, but they need to go through bankruptcy to get rid of excess cost and the debt burden that they’d — they’d built up.I said that we would provide guarantees and — and that was what was able to allow these companies to go through bankruptcy, to come out of bankruptcy. Under no circumstances would I do anything other than to help this industry get on its feet. And the idea that has been suggested that I would liquidate the industry — of course not. Of course not.

Romney is right on one front. In his infamous New York Times op-ed, titled by the paper “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt,” he did say that government money should be made available for automakers if they needed help emerging from bankruptcy. But that’s really not the point of the debate.

As Jonathan Cohn of The New Republic pointed out, the question confronting the president in late 2008 and early 2009 was “how the two car companies [Chrysler and GM] would get money to reorganize.” They needed the cash in order to pay their bills while in bankruptcy because if they couldn’t pay their bills they wouldn’t get loans. The government, in fact, went looking for private-sector lenders to help with the cost. But because of the recession none of them -– not even Romney’s own Bain Capital -– would bite.

So the question became, should the president act? And on that front, there is very little confusion with respect to Romney’s stance. As the Associated Press headlined a Nov. 20, 2008 article: “Romney adamantly against auto industry bailout.” And as Romney himself told CBS News that day, in a clip that hasn’t re-surfaced yet this election cycle: “There’s no question but that if you just write a check that you’re going to see these companies go out of business ultimately.”Romney would repeat the line during an interview with NBC’s “Today” show that same day.

“If you write a check, they’re going to go out of business,” he said. “If instead you help them restructure, you make them cost-competitive with the Japanese, they can stay in business virtually forever. And so this is a time, an opportunity for us, to help these companies shed their excess costs so they can stay in business.”

Tribute Songs #3 – Missing You

The amazing Diana Ross recorded Missing You (written by Lionel Richie) as a tribute to Marvin Gaye.  This is a great live performance of the song, see what you think…..

Diana and Marvin recorded a duet album in 1973 and they were pretty close friends.  Here is my favorite song from their duet album….

Checkout this tribute to Marvin from the 1985 American Music Awards show in 1985 (the year after Marvin was murdered by his father)

As always, let me know what you think!

Do We Really Want A President That Doesn’t Understand World Geography?

Thanks to the Huffington Post for this article.  I totally missed this last night!

Foreign Policy Debate:

Mitt Romney’s Geography Gaffe

Mitt Romney: Syria is Iran’s only ally in the Arab world. It’s their route to the sea. It’s the route for them to arm Hezbollah in Lebanon, which threatens, of course, our ally, Israel. And so seeing Syria remove Assad is a very high priority for us.

Mitt Romney raised some eyebrows during last night’s foreign policy debate when he suggested that Syria is Iran’s main route to the sea.

A quick look at the map reveals that 1. Iran does not border Syria and 2. that Iran has access to the sea in both its north and south.

The Washington Post pointed out that this is not the first time that Romney made this rather peculiar suggestion. Romney referred to Syria as Iran’s route to the sea during the Arizona GOP debate in February.

Just Like I Called It……President Obama The Decisive Winner Last Night!

Way to go President Obama!

********************************************

The third and final presidential debate was President Obama’s best moment in the campaign so far. He was prepared on every issue and knew Mitt Romney’s record of past statements just as well.

Obama succeeded because he conveyed his unique view of the world from the Oval Office. For undecided voters watching, all they probably heard was that he’s the commander-in-chief. And that’s what Team Obama wanted.

For the most part, Romney made an effort to look presidential by not attacking. He was exceedingly careful and desperately tried not to make a mistake. In fact, despite his rhetoric for the last two years, he now apparently agrees with most of the Obama administration’s foreign policy.

As a result, Romney’s biggest opponent was not the president, it was his own words. Obama did a brilliant job of bringing up past Romney statements — on Iraq, on the nation’s biggest adversary, on Afghanistan, on Osama bin Laden — to make him look unprepared for the presidency.

As the debate went on, Romney tried many times to move the international affairs discussion back to the economy where he was more comfortable. It was as if he had only 30 minutes of foreign policy talking points for a 90 minute debate. As a result he seemed to string together random thoughts which often made him sound incoherent.

Obama won the debate hands down.

Bob Schieffer started off doing a good job as moderator, framing questions but still letting the candidates engage each other. But he lost control of the debate as both Romney and Obama often preferred to talk about the economy. It’s clear that both candidates know that most voters don’t care much about foreign policy.

The 1980s Are Calling To Ask For

Their Foreign Policy Back

During the presidential debate on Monday evening, President Barack Obama deployed a Seinfeldian zinger to mock former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee. Romney had said that al Qaeda and other terrorist groups are “rushing in” as revolutions shake up the Muslim world.

“Gov. Romney, I’m glad that you recognize that al Qaeda is a threat,” Obama said, “because a few months ago when you were asked what’s the biggest geopolitical threat facing America, you said Russia.”

“The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years,” Obama said.

The riff recalled a famous episode the Seinfeld sitcom in which the character George Costanza thinks of a comeback long after a co-worker had humiliated him by saying the ocean had called to complain that it was running out of shrimp.

To some observers, Obama’s lackluster performance in the first presidential debate in Colorado several weeks ago, followed by a series of new arguments during a rally the next day, seemed reminiscent of Costanza’s “Jerk Store” comeback.

On Monday, Obama accused Romney of importing different parts of his agenda from other decades, in addition to the 1980s.

“Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s, just like the social policies of the 1950s, and the economic policies of the 1920s,” Obama said.

“You say that you’re not interested in duplicating what happened in Iraq, but just a few weeks ago you said you think we should have more troops in Iraq right now. And the challenge we have –- I know you haven’t been in a position to actually execute foreign policy, but every time you’ve offered an opinion, you’ve been wrong.”

Obama On Size Of Navy: ‘We Also Have Fewer Horses And Bayonets’

President Barack Obama mocked Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Monday for his repeated attack over the size of the Navy, which he has said proves the president doesn’t prioritize national defense.

“You mention the Navy, for example, and the fact that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets,” Obama said during the final presidential debate. “We have these things called aircraft carriers and planes land on them. We have ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.”

“It’s not a game of battleship where we’re counting ships, it’s ‘What are our priorities?'” he said.

He said his administration sits down with the military forces, including heads of the Navy, to discuss what resources they need.

This week’s Long Song Tuesday offering is another great one from Eric Andersen, Dream to Rimbaud.  The song was inspired by Arthur Rimbuad, the French poet.  Let’s listen…..

If you aren’t familiar with Arthur Rimbaud, and I admit I wasn’t when I first heard this song, here is a great ten minute documentary about him.

I have always loved the Pousette Dart Band.  As soon as I heard President Obama discussing Romnesia last Friday I knew I would have to create a modified version of Amnesia by them to use as the theme song for Romnesia.  See what you think….I have included the original after my modified version.

Romnesia

The Original

Pousette-Dart Band – Amnesia

I’m working on a slide show to go with the song but thought you might like a sneak peak of just the song.
