This year’s holiday music countdown focuses on funny/weird holiday songs. I hope you enjoy it!
Holiday Songs
Happy New Years!
New Years day is the time each year that we all make resolutions (usually knowing full well that we will never keep them). This year I ask each of you to make one resolution that I guarantee will make the world a better place and make you a better person in the process. That resolution is summarized in today’s song, Let It Be Me, by the Indigo Girls. Yeah, I know this is really not a song about New Years but I hope you will forgive me as I try to make an important point. Let’s listen…..
So all I am asking is for you to be a force for good this year in your own day-to-day life. This isn’t rocket science….
- pass along a kind word to people that you meet as you go through the year
- turn the other cheek whenever you can
- and, as the Indigo Girls put it, “shine your life like a light”.
This, my friends, is my only resolution for 2013! I hope you make it yours as well.
As always I am interested in your thoughts…..
Here are lyrics to this amazing song:
Let It Be Me
Sticks and stones
Battle zones
A single light bulb
On a single thread for the black
*************************
Sirens wail
History fails
Rose colored glass
Begins to age and crack
*************************
While the politicians shadowbox
The power ring
In an endless split decision
Never solve anything
From a neighbor’s distant land
I heard the strain of the common man
*************************
Let it be me
(This is not a fighting song)
Let it be me
(Not a wrong for a wrong)
Let it be me
If the world is night
Shine my life like a light
*************************
Well the world seems spent
And the president
Has no good idea
Of who the masses are
Well I’m one of them
And I’m among friends
We’re trying to see beyond
The fences in our own backyards
*************************
I’ve seen the kingdoms blow
Like ashes in the winds of change
Yeah but the power of truth
Is the fuel for the flame
So the darker the ages get
There’s a stronger beacon yet
*************************
Let it be me
(This is not a fighting song)
Let it be me
(Not a wrong for a wrong)
Let it be me
If the world is night
Shine my life like a light
*************************
In the kind word you speak
In the turn of the cheek
(In the turn of the cheek)
When your vision stays clear
In the face of your fear
(In the face of your fear)
*************************
Then you see turning out a light switch
Is their only power
When we stand like spotlights
In a mighty tower
All for one and one for all
Then we sing the common call
*************************
Let it be me
(This is not a fighting song)
Let it be me
(Not a wrong for a wrong)
Let it be me
If the world is night
Shine my life like a light
So even though this is listed as my #2 New Years Song, I must confess that it is really my favorite. Dan is one of my favorite singer/songwriters of all time and Same Auld Lang Syne is as close to a perfect song as you will ever find. Let’s listen….
I was lucky enough to see Dan perform live many time in the 1970s and 1980s and from his between song banter during those shows I knew that this song was based on something that really happened to him but I didn’t know the details. A blog post by Annie Zaleski that was published after Dan’s death fills in some of those details.
“Same Old Lang Syne was written about an old girlfriend of his who now lives in St. Louis. The Peoria Journal Star printed a nice article which included an interview with Jill Greulich and her chance encounter with Fogelberg in a grocery store, long after they stopped dating.”
After graduating college, Jill relocated to the Chicago area, where she worked as an elementary teacher and flight attendant. Not long after college, she married a man from that area, and her connection to Fogelberg faded to memories.
But on Christmas Eve 1975, Jill and her husband visited her parents, who still lived in the Woodruff district. Also at the home were some friends of the family.
During the gathering, Jill’s mother asked her to run out for egg nog. Jill drove off in search of an open store.
Meanwhile, a few blocks away, a similar scenario was playing out at the Fogelberg home, where Dan Fogelberg was visiting family for the holiday. They needed whipping cream to make Irish coffees, so Fogelberg volunteered to go search for some.
By happenstance and because almost every other business on the East Bluff was closed, Jill and Fogelberg both ended up at the Convenient store at the top of Abington Hill, at Frye Avenue and Prospect Road. She got there first, and Fogelberg noticed her shortly after arriving.
They bought a six pack, sipped beer in her car and gabbed away. “We had some laughs,” Jill recalls.
Our 2012 end of the year music review concludes today with the Best Album award. I identified my top ten albums for 2012 in yesterday’s post. If you missed that post, now would be a good time to read it before I announce my pick. Go ahead……I’ll wait.
Ok, here we go……the best album for 2012, by a landslide, is Wrecking Ball by Bruce Springsteen. Bruce captures the United States of 2012 and in the process shows that he is still growing as a songwriter and performer. To make that last point, checkout Rocky Ground where Bruce manages to combine great lyric with a performance that includes elements of hip hop and Gospel. I am not a hip hop fan at all but Bruce manages to use it in a context where even I like it. Let’s listen to a live performance of Rocky Ground from South by Southwest this year……..
It’s a great album…..buy it if you don’t already have it.
Today’s selection for Favorite New Years Song is titled New Years Day and is from one of my favorite albums released this year, Ashes and Roses, by Mary Chapin Carpenter. Let’s listen……

As always, let me know what you think!
Long time readers of this blog will not be surprised by my inclusion of this classic Barry Manilow song. While, in general, my musical tastes are a little harder than Barry’s more middle of the road sound I give him a lot of credit for his songwriting and performance skills. If you aren’t familiar with this one, it is really worth a listen!
Our 2012 end of the year music review continues with the Best Album Concept award which goes to Green Day for their release of Uno!, Dos!, and Tre!. While each of these Albums was released individually (and has its own unique flavor), they were all recorded at the same time and deserve to be considered as part of a single concept. In general, these albums represent a move back to Green Day’s roots, after their American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown forays into the land of Rock Operas (don’t get me wrong…..American Idiot is one of my all time favorites). In these three albums Green Day also manages to pay homage to many of their rock influences like the Who. Let’s listen to some sample track from each of the individual albums.
Uno! – Stay The Night
If you are interested in hearing more about Uno! checkout the “New Music That Doesn’t Suck #7” post that I made about that album.

Dos! – Ashley
If you liked Ashley you can listen to the whole Dos! album below….

Tre! – Sex, Drugs, and Violence
The last song of the album brings the concept full circle back to the more recent Green Day sound with a beautiful ballad, The Forgotten.
Tre! – The Forgotten
If you liked the two songs above you can listen to the whole Tre! album below….
Today’s addition to my list of Favorite New Years Songs, A Long December, is from the The Counting Crows. Let’s listen….
Our 2012 end of the year music review continues with the Best New Artist award which goes to Fort Atlantic. I just discovered Fort Atlantic about two weeks ago but they released their self titled first album back in May. The album is absolutely amazing, in my humble opinion, so I am surprised that I have not heard about them before now. At this point, I am on a personal crusade to make sure that they get the attention that they deserve in the coming year. I will post more about them soon but for now let’s listen to my favorite cut from their album.
I am expecting big things for Fort Atlantic in the future!
Today’s New Years Song offering, The New Year, comes from Death Cab for Cutie. I really like this song and hope you enjoy it as well.
Our 2012 end of the year music review continues with an award called, The Best New Music That I Had Never Heard. My music friend Gerard from the Netherlands was nice enough to turn me on to some music from his country. I can honestly say that I am really enjoying all of the music but my favorite so far is a song called Liefdesliedjes by a group called De Jazzpolitie (from what Gerard has told me, the song title translates into Songs of Love). Let’s listen….
As I have mentioned to Gerard, the song reminds me a little of Mark Knopfler but at the same time it is unique. The instrumentation is amazing with all kind of interesting things going on in the background. You really need to listen to the song on headphones to truly appreciate it. As an example, there is a little bass run around 2:08 that just knocks my socks off. I promise to share more of the music from Gerard during the coming year.
Much thanks to Gerard for his friendship and for sharing his music!
Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! We are gong to finish up the year with a countdown to New Years Day. As part of this countdown we will checkout some of my favorite songs about New Years and review some of the musical highlights from this year.
First up is a new years song from George Harrison. You have to love this one!
RIP George
My selection for Most Significant Musical Event of 2012 kicks off our 2012 end of the year music review. This one is an easy call for me…..Bruce Springsteen joining President Obamas campaign during the last crucial weeks before the November election. The duo of ex-President Bill Clinton and Bruce toured the battleground states tirelessly in advance of the election and deserve a lot of credit for President Obama’s victory. Here are clips from both of these American heroes.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone that reads this blog. I wish you all the best!
To close out our favorite Holiday Songs series I have two special Holiday Greetings from the southern US where I live. First up is Christmas in Dixie which was written and recorded by the group Alabama. For those of you that are not from the US, Dixie refers to the southern states in the US.
Next up is a great song by Jimmy Buffet called Merry Christmas Alabama.
Our final post in this series is my all time favorite Holiday song, I Believe In Father Christmas by Greg Lake one of the very best voices in rock music. Christmas, as it is celebrated today, has become overly commercialized in my opinion and I think this song is a wonderful protest against what Christmas has become. As always…..let me know what you think!
So today I have a couple of Holiday songs with a strange but completely logical connection. First up is a great song/video that takes me back to the 1960s, Hippie Holiday with Jefferson Airplane. You have to listen to and watch this one to get the maximum enjoyment……
The second song today is Christmas Time in the City by Mary Chapin Carpenter. So you are probably scratching you head and thinking that I have lost my mind. How could I ever put Jefferson Airplane and Mary Chapin together in the same post? Here is how I got to this point….Jefferson Airplane are the best representatives of the San Francisco sound, San Francisco is my favorite city in the whole world, and this year in particular I would like nothing more than to spend Christmas in San Francisco (actually anywhere other than North Alabama). That is not going to happen, so instead I will listen to Mary sing about Christmas Time in the City. Well….it made sense to me!
My special gift to you today comes courtesy of my friends at Infinite Foolishness, a 1968 concert by the amazing Jefferson Airplane. Grab it while it is still available at the following link.
